Course Introduction
The NPORS 104 – Overhead Gantry Crane course is designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to operate an overhead gantry crane safely and efficiently. This comprehensive training program covers various aspects of crane operation, ensuring that participants are well-prepared for their roles in the construction and industrial sectors.
One of the key components of the course is the emphasis on performing pre-use checks. Participants learn how to meticulously inspect the crane before each operation, ensuring that it is in proper working condition and meets all safety standards. This pre-use inspection is crucial for preventing accidents and equipment malfunctions, which can have serious consequences in construction and industrial settings.
Another important skill acquired during the course is basic slinging and signals. Participants are trained to properly attach loads to the crane’s hook using slings and other rigging equipment. They also learn how to communicate effectively using standardized hand signals, ensuring clear and safe coordination between the crane operator and ground personnel. This skill is essential for load handling precision and safety.
The course also covers the process of raising, transporting, and landing a load using the overhead gantry crane. Participants learn how to control the crane, position the load accurately, and safely lower it to its intended location. This training helps reduce the risk of accidents and property damage, which is of utmost importance in environments where heavy loads are frequently moved.
Course Information
- It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the learner will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
- Set up exclusion zone
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for overhead crane use
- Conduct all pre-operational and running checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
- Prepare the overhead crane for use and operate machine safely and efficiently
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for Slinger / Signaller use
- Environmental considerations
- Carry out all end of work and shut down procedures
Those who are required to operate an Overhead Crane as a part of their work duties.
Delegate Requirements – Delegates should be physically fit, in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness.
Novice – This course is designed for the complete Novice delegate.
Experienced – Delegates must have used the equipment in a range of operations for a minimum of 3 months.
Refresher – Delegates must have already attended a course and have valid proof in the form of certification.
Experienced Worker Test (EWA) – Delegates must have used the equipment in a range of operations for a minimum of 2 years.
