About this course
The course covers the safe operation of grass cutting and mowing machinery: recognising the risks and the operator's responsibilities, carrying out pre-use checks on the machine and the work area, and choosing the right PPE.
Delegates then practise starting, manoeuvring and stopping the machine, and working safely on different terrain and in different conditions.
Course content
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Understand the industry, its dangers and their responsibilities as an operator
- Use the manufacturer's handbook for the machine being used
- Locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Locate and identify the key controls and explain their functions
- Set up an exclusion zone
- Carry out all pre-use checks to the manufacturer's and legal requirements
- Choose the right type of machine for the work
- Identify and maintain the right PPE for grass cutter / mower use
- Prepare the grass cutter or mower for use
- Carry out safety checks at the work area
- Operate the machine safely and efficiently
- Understand environmental considerations
- Store and transport the grass cutter or mower
- Dispose of cut material
- Carry out end of shift and shut down procedures
Who should attend
Anyone who needs to operate a grass cutter or mower as part of their job.
Novice: This course is designed for complete novices.
Experienced: delegates must have used the equipment in a range of operations for at least 3 months.
Refresher: delegates must already have attended a course and hold valid certification.
Experienced Worker Test (EWT): delegates must have used the equipment in a range of operations for at least 2 years.
Delegate requirements: delegates should be physically fit and in good health, and generally free of problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness. Being able to read and write, and having some driving experience, is helpful but not essential.
Qualification
Successful delegates receive an NPORS ID card and registration. NPORS has been a trusted, recognised name in the industry since 1992.
