About this course
Powered pallet trucks move palletised loads around warehouses, distribution centres and manufacturing sites. This course covers the health and safety rules that apply, load capacities and stability, and how to spot hazards in the work area.
The practical sessions cover steering, manoeuvring and stopping, correct pallet handling, and stacking and de-stacking where it applies. Delegates also learn to carry out pre-use checks and to report faults promptly.
Course content
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Understand the industry, its dangers and their responsibilities as an operator
- Use the manufacturer's handbook for the machine being used
- Locate the major components of the machine and explain what they do
- Use the steering, driving and braking controls
- Carry out pre-use checks to the manufacturer's and legal requirements
- Start, stop and move the machine safely
- Manoeuvre the machine safely, laden and unladen, in open and confined areas
- Carry out safety checks at the work area
- Set the machine up ready for lifting and load handling tasks
- Lift and move loads accurately and safely at different locations
- Load and unload external transport safely
- Fit, adjust and remove attachments
- Understand loading and unloading procedures for transporting the machine
- Carry out end of shift and shut down procedures
Who should attend
Anyone already working, or preparing to work, in the industry who will use a powered pedestrian pallet truck as part of their job.
Novice: This course is designed for complete novices.
Experienced: delegates must have used the equipment regularly in a range of operations for at least 12 months and be able to show a good understanding of safe operating procedures.
Refresher: delegates must already have attended a course and hold valid certification.
Delegate requirements: delegates should be physically fit and in good health, and generally free of problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness. Being able to read and write, and having some driving experience, is helpful but not essential.
Qualification
This course is accredited by RTITB, the Road Transport Industry Training Board, which sets UK standards for workplace transport training including forklift operators.
Successful delegates receive the RTITB Certificate of Basic Operator Training.
