Course content
By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:
- Discuss the hazards of yard shunting
- Use the equipment safely
- Identify attachments, components and safety features
- Carry out an effective pre-use inspection of the combination
- Reverse the combination safely in a straight line, and from the left and right
- Couple and uncouple a semi-trailer safely
- Give the right signals to a driver carrying out yard shunting duties
- Respond correctly to signals from a banksman
- Explain the risks of working with a banksman and how to reduce them
Who should attend
Anyone already working, or preparing to work, in the industry who will use a vehicle yardshunter as part of their job.
Novice: This course is designed for complete novices.
Experienced: delegates must have used the equipment in a range of operations for at least 3 months.
Refresher: delegates must already have attended a course and hold valid certification.
Delegate requirements: delegates should be physically fit and in good health, and generally free of problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness. Being able to read and write, and having some driving experience, is helpful but not essential. Delegates must hold a full DVSA Category B driving licence.
Qualification
This course is accredited by RTITB, the Road Transport Industry Training Board, which sets UK standards for workplace transport training including forklift operators.
