IPAF Instructor Training
Course Introduction
This five-day course is designed for experienced operators who wish to become IPAF instructors. All delegates must meet the course entry criteria.
We also deliver this course for a range of national MEWP hire companies throughout the UK.
36 months’ MEWP operating experience
IPAF Operator PAL card held for 6 months minimum
IPAF Demonstrator PAL card held for 3 months minimum
IPAF MEWPs for Managers
Evidence of Acceptable Instructional Techniques training – (3 days minimum)
Successful completion of an approved Harness Instructor course
Evidence of HSE required standard for First Aid at Work training level
Course Information
- It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the trainee operator will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:
- Day 1 – INTRODUCTION INITIAL ASSESSMENT
- Theory test
- Test of candidate’s ability on the machine
- Preparation for presentation
- Day 2 – IPAF COURSES
- Individual candidate 30-minute presentation on chosen MEWP
- subject – assessed
- Planning the day
- Overview of the IPAF Courses available
- Introduction to the IPAF Operator course
- IPAF operator practical/testing procedures – machines
- Operator Practical demonstration and testing – assessed
- Day 3 – IPAF COURSES (continued)

- Final test with IPAF Allocated Examiner. (1 for 1–2 candidates, 2 for 3–4 candidates)
- POST COURSE
- After passing the IPAF Instructor Examination and before receiving the Instructor License, Instructors need to be mentored for three days, usually by an IPAF Senior Instructor or Examiner. On the first day, the Instructor is mentored during the half-day theory and observes the mentor conducting the half-day practical. On the second day, the Instructor observes the mentor conducting the half-day theory and is mentored during the half-day practical. On the third day, the Instructor conducts a full-day course with theory and practical, under observation of the mentor. Mentoring must be carried out within six months of completion of the Instructor course. If it is not completed within this timescale, then the potential Instructor will need to complete the whole course.
This qualification has been developed for those who want to train other delegates to use MEWPs
Delegate Requirements – Delegates should be physically fit, in good health and should, generally, not have problems with eyesight or hearing, heart disease, high blood pressure, epilepsy, impaired limb function, alcohol or drug dependence or psychiatric illness. It is, however, desirable (but not mandatory) that applicants should be literate and have had driving experience as an indication of dexterity
To start this course the delegate must have or have completed the following prerequisites.

IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) training programs are designed to ensure the safe and efficient operation of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). IPAF offers several specific training categories, including IPAF 3a, 3b, and 1b, each tailored to different types of MEWPs and their operation.
The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment worldwide in the widest sense – through providing technical advice and information; through influencing and interpreting legislation and standards; and through safety initiatives and training programmes.
IPAF is a not-for-profit organisation owned by its members, which include manufacturers, rental companies, distributors, contractors and users. IPAF members operate a majority of the MEWP rental fleet worldwide and manufacture about 85% of platforms on the market.
